Curriculum

The content of Highland Grove’s curriculum is formed by daily observations made up of the children’s interests, skills, areas on which to further extend, as well as parent input.

The staff’s years of experience and knowledge of child development ensures the planned and spontaneous activities are age appropriate and will promote the optimum development of each child, as well as being lots of fun!

Highland Grove has developed a reputation as a centre which offers children a varied and extensive curriculum. These programs include the development of early computer skills, exploring the natural environment, learning about various languages and cultures, wonderful art and craft experiences and an extensive music program. We are fortunate to have members of our team with musical backgrounds. The sound of singing along to a guitar is frequently heard at Highland Grove.

Highland Grove has excellent relationships with our local schools. Our School Transition program includes consultation between our Early Childhood teacher and the infant teachers, visits to the schools with photographic documentation and an annual parent “School Transition” evening with an experienced guest speaker.

The core of Highland Grove’s curriculum centres on the staff’s knowledge of what a child needs to learn, experience and develop in an early childhood setting. As a team we work hard to follow up on each child’s individual interests. Be it dinosaurs, insects, outer space or the sea! As we explore these topics, researching, documenting and enjoying, we are further extending the whole development of each child.

Appealing Developmental Portfolios are kept annually on each child. These are a collection of photos, art work, written observations and twice yearly Developmental Profiles written by the staff. These Profiles include the various development areas and give families a description of their child’s recent growth and progress.

The Portfolios are a gift to our families at the year’s end.
